What's an Andiron?
Andirons - also known as fire dogs - are a bracket support system that helps wood logs burn better in an open fireplace, allowing more air circulation underneath the firewood itself, thus producing less smoke. This particular bronze pair dates back to the 1800’s, following the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era.
It’s particularly great that these come in a pair because of the rich history of gryphons, which are the main motif here. With the legs, body and tail of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, these are truly unique mythological creatures. They are powerful, majestic and it is said that they mate for life. If either partner dies, the other continues its journey through life utterly alone, never searching for another mate. This folklore itself is enough to light a fire!
